Antique Mason's Heros Cross Patent Nov 30TH 1858 Quart Jar Light Aqua

Description: A very nice Hero's Cross Mason's Patent Nov. 30th, 1858 quart canning jar with a milk glass-lined zinc lid. It is marked on the bottom with Pat Nov 26, 67, with numbers 413 in the middle. The Maltese Cross symbol indicates the Hero Glass Works / Hero Fruit Jar Company of Philadelphia, PA, made this jar during the 1870-1890s. This symbol can be found either above or below the word MASON'S. In most examples, the letters "H," "F," "J," and "Co" can be faintly seen within each "arm" of the cross. (Source: glassbottleworks.com) Mouth-blown jars have a ground rim/lip and were usually blown in post-bottom molds, showing variable amounts of crudeness depending on age, manufacturer, and other factors (Source:The Society for Historical Archaeology). This jar has an interesting manufacturing flaw. A wave of bubbles on the bottom edge. It is not a crack, just an added feature. Please look closely at the photos. This unique canning jar is in excellent condition, with no chips, dings, cracks, or chiggers, with the exception of a rough lip and the flaw on the bottom edge. The features, the waviness and little bubbles expected with glass jars of this era. Make this very interesting jar part of your historical canning jar collection!
