Description: A 2 inch tall beautiful RED RUBY flashed glass cup with a slight PURPLE AMETHYST color handle and base. An antique cup from MT VERNON WASHINGTON with handle. Note that the BODY is flashed RUBY RED color but the bottom portion and the handle are a light PURPLE AMETHYST color. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE blown-glass figurine that dates WELL OVER 100 YEARS OLD old. Cup reads: "Mollie / Mt. Vernon - Wn". Condition: It is in super CLEAN CLEAN condition BUT we knocked it over while photo'ing it and it now has a chip in the lip with an inch long crack running down from it, as clearly seen in the last picture. Back in the day these little souvenirs were often won at small-town fairs, sold in small businesses or sold during a large event, to remember and advertise the town where the event took place. The very bottom section and handle of this cup have a light amethyst tint to it. You hear about old glass turning amethyst in the sunlight, here is how it works: The amethyst color that is in the base is the result of it being blown with glass that had manganese added to it. Manganese is a mineral that was pulverized and added to glass to make the glass crystal clear. Only clear glass from before 1915 had manganese in it. Then, when exposed to sunlight the manganese starts to oxidize and turns a nice amethyst or lavender color, the result of a chemical reaction. The longer it is in the sun light, the darker purple it turns. A glass item has to be old enough to begin with, as with few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1915 had manganese in it. With the start of WWI, manganese was no longer available as foreign imports decreased and domestic resources turned towards the war effort. NO MORE purple glass after 1915!
