Description: This is an incredible and expressive Fine Antique Old Nautical Seascape Captain Shipwreck Oil Painting on canvas, depicting a stoic ship captain above the deck of a small vessel, pulling at the ropes to steady his small ship amongst tumultuous ocean waves. Dark sunset lit skies and torrential waters can be seen in the distance, and sea water is shown flowing over the top of the ship. The brave figure keeps a cool head as he tries to prevent his vessel from capsizing. The emotion and peril in this scene are vividly portrayed by the artist, and the overall painting expresses such a powerful moment in a masterful and nuanced way. Signed illegibly and dated "1922" in the lower right corner. This artwork is clearly by the hand a talented, likely well-known painter, but I cannot decipher the signature. Perhaps you recognize the artist or their work? Approximately 25 1/2 x 30 1/2 x 2 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 18 1/2 x 23 3/4 inches. Good coverall condition for 100+ years of age, with a few small and subtle tears and light craquelure to the painted surface, and mild scuffing, edge wear, chipping, and gilding loss to the ornate and beautiful hand carved gilded wood frame (please see photos.) Acquired from an old collection in Los Angeles County, California, but I suspect that this artwork likely originates from the Northeastern United States.
