Description: This listing is for an Antique Original Ravca Stockinette Doll , which represents a lady from the Berrichome region of France , 10 inches tall , 5 1/2 inches widest , with hand painted face , made by Barnard Ravca, weighing 101 grams net . A paper label attached ( clipped ) to her scarf is marked Original Ravca , MADE IN FRANCE , and hand written Berrichome . A second cloth label under skirt reads : KIMPORT DOLLS , INDEPENDENCE MO. THIS DOLL WAS MADE IN , FRANCE ( stamped / printed )Another cloth label on back botom of skirt reads: MADE IN FRANCE. Kimport was a company based in Independence, Missouri, Ran by the McKim family. Kimport imported foreign dolls, and ran a newsletter through which they sold the dolls they imported. I understand that hair on Ravca dolls is mohair. Stockings making face and hands seem deteriorated in part but it weather it is done intentionally or deteriorated it create great shadings. Needle sculpted head. Ravca cloth dolls represent various regions of France, particularly the character of older faces. His early dolls, before 1939, were produced in France but Germany invasion of France left him stranded in the United States after he attended the World’s Fair in New York City. This doll is made from cotton with a needle sculpted face covered with a silk stocking. The features of the doll are hand painted and the body has wire armatures. The shirt is age stained from possible humidity and dirt in environment it was kept in and apron is faded and stained and while skirt is in good conition , it is probably faded and stained also. The ring around the head which has separated on front , seems to be the front edge of a hat made of stocking . The back of this hat still is attached and perhaps the front can be brought over to where it was and somehow attached again. She is wearing klompens which I am not sure what they are made of. The umbrella in hand is made of fibrous material . I consider this doll rare and in very good antique as shown condition. Great hand painted face. While this class of dolls might be overlooked and undervalued , they are extremely unique and rare and one of a kind. From estate of an avid long time doll collector.
