Description: Pair of antique British majolica plates which date to about 1870-80. The iconic design features molded geranium flowers and leaves on a stippled background all in bright green with gently scalloped edges. The only mark on the back of these is the incised number "12," and I have seen these same plates attributed to every British company of the period including Wedgwood, Davenport and Hope & Carter, but I can not verify any of these independently, so I am calling them "maker unknown." They measure 9" in diameter and are both in excellent condition by antique majolica standards. One has a tiny glaze chip on the edge and a manufacturing bubble right next to it. The other has a funky pin mark on the back that is bigger than it should be, but it is obviously not visible from the front. They both have crazing throughout, which is par for the course with this type of majolica, and some residue from the sticker of the antique dealer on the back. But there are no chips or cracks, and these display beautifully with their glossy green design! This is part of a lovely collection of antique majolica that I recently acquired and will be listing over the next week.
