Description: A little history lesson first, courtesy of artloftgallery.com ... At some point in time during the 1700s, it was discovered that sperm whale oil burned more brightly and clearly than the oil from other whales, and sperm whale oil did not have the offensive odor that other whale oils had; so it was preferred. But by the mid-1800s the whaling industry was beginning to see a decline; and by 1859 petroleum was discovered. That discovery, along with the onset of the Civil War, brought the industry to an end by the late 1800s/1900s. The old whale oil lamps were easily converted from burning whale oil to kerosene and then later to electricity. And now on to this listing ... Offered here is a beautiful late 1800s glass whale oil style table lamp. It comes with a tall harp and finial. I could not easily remove the harp and didn't want to damage it, so it will be shipped as is, and be aware it may be difficult to remove if you want to swap it out for a smaller harp. No shade or bulb included. The middle part of the lamp is a cranberry red color that has a cut to clear design. The design is actually cut into the glass on a wheel - not pressed glass. The design depicts a grapevine with leaves all the way around. The base is NOT made of marble! It is actually milk glass with a painted gold design all the way around. Some wear to the gold paint. No chips, cracks, or unusual wear on the glass parts (either the red middle part or the milk glass base). Electrical works. There is what looks like a drip-type linear stain on the INSIDE of the red bowl, leaving a little cloudy line. The only area where that is really noticeable is where it passes through one of the cut-to-clear leaves of the grapevine. (See close up photo). Some areas of wear/pitting to the metal part that connects the milk glass base to the red middle part. Exceptionally fine condition for a piece that's well over 100 years old. (Of course, the electrical parts are not that old). Milk glass base measures 5" X 5"". With the harp in place, measures about 26" tall up to the tip of the finial. (BTW, the finial screws on/off easily, but the tip of it is threaded, indicating there was likely a further decorative piece to the finial that is no longer there. Finial is easily replaceable). TO REITERATE: NO SHADE OR BULB INCLUDED, AND FINIAL IS INCOMPLETE. I am listing many other items on eBay, including other vintage lamps and lamp shades. In fact, I am listing another whale oil style lamp very much like this one with the same grapevine cut-to-clear design, but in BLUE! So, please check my other listings, as I will be happy to combine shipping. I do not accept returns. Please check out the photos and the listing description carefully. Ask any questions if you are unsure. ABSOLUTELY NO REFUNDS, EXCHANGES. NO RETURNS ACCEPTED.
