Description: The stein depicted in this auction was made by the Matthias Girmscheid firm from Germany. The stein is pottery & relief with a pewter lid and pewter thumb. The form number is either 580 and the size is 0.5 L. The stein is in full color and is called Hunter Bidding farewell. Founded in 1884 in the town of Höhr, the firm of Matthias Girmscheid merged briefly with the firm of Gilles & Sohn in the 1920s, no doubt in an effort to survive in Germany’s difficult post-war economy. However, by 1930 the partnership had dissolved and the two companies again began producing independently. The Girmscheid factory is still in operation today, producing a wide range of salt-glazed stoneware products.
