Architecturally salvaged, this is a particularly tactile, hand-hewn example, with traces of a distressed painted finish from its previous incarnation. MID-19th CENTURY. At 8.4 Kgs, this is a wonderful decorator's piece. This exquisite green quartzite niche has been sourced from Jodhpur in Rajasthan, dates back to the mid-19th century and is becoming increasingly difficult to source. Reclaimed from an architectural salvage project, this niche would once have graced a grand Haveli or palace, and been used to house a ghee or oil lamp. We were privileged to visit the privately owned 11th c. Juna Mahal in Dungarpur last year, where we photographed similar green quartzite niches of this nature in their natural habitat. LAST FOUR IMAGES. This large hand-hewn example still shows traces of a distressed painted finish to its exterior, and a rich smokey patina to the niche from its previous incarnation. It's an authentic, impressive stone niche that has housed oil or ghee lamps for decades, throwing a soft shimmering light on many a balmy Indian night. At 8.4 kgs, this niche is substantial, and would look good, inside or out.
