WONDERFUL 2-GALLON STONEWARE JUGEARLY 19TH CENTURY DIMENSIONS About 14" tall x 9" diameter. DESCRIPTION Stamped " 2 / EDMANDS & CO." over a cobalt blue flower and foliage decoration. Single applied handle. 1812 Barnabas Edmands began producing stoneware pottery on Austin Street in Charlestown, Massachusetts, near where the Bunker Hill monument stands. He was one of the earliest makers to produce stoneware as a better alternative to redware. It was a harder ceramic, burned at a higher temperature and was safer to use. They remained a small operation, with at most five men working in the pottery. After 1850, his sons Edward and Thomas continued to produce under the name Edmands & Hopper Pottery Works. CONDITION Overall very good. Dark cobalt design. Good surface. Noticeable impact hairline in the lower half of the front of the jug (all visible in the images).
