Description: Antique Sunderland Pink Lustre THE SAILORS FAREWELL Commemorative Jug, c. 1800 - 1835. This large pitcher or jug has an early pottery body, probably creamware, with an early applied handle. This jug has a pink lustre decorated exterior, with a black transfer that has been hand colored. The transfer shows a sailor's farewell on one side with a banner above it that reads, "THE SAILOR'S FAREWELL - Sweet, oh Sweet is that sensation. Where two hearts in union meet. But the pain of Separation. Mingles bitter with the Sweet.". The other side shows a sailing ship, with a verse framed by flowers and leaves. The words read, "When first I was a foremast man I often did pretend. If ever I got promoted, I'd be a seamans friend. but in a little time I was promoted to be mate. I then like many others forgot my former state; When I became a Captain I thought myself a King. I then entirely did forget the foremast man I'd been." The front of the pitcher has a black transfer of a ship, that has been hand colored. This was manufactured in the Staffordshire district of England around 1800 to commemorate and to honor the Sailors or Mariners.
