Description: DESCRIPTION- An antique Victorian wedding/engagement ring box from the distinguished British jeweller Heming & Co. (estimated circa the late 1800s to the early 1900s). This fine-quality ring box is covered in taupe-coloured leather and lined with cream-coloured silk and marigold-coloured velvet. It would add a unique touch to your proposal, engagement shoot, wedding ceremony, or accompany a treasured piece of jewelry. MARKSOn the interior, in black lettering: “BY APPOINTMENT[Crest of the Lion and the Unicorn]HEMING & Co.28. CONDUIT St.LONDON, W.” Some relevant dates:- Heming & Co. was founded in London in 1745 by Thomas Heming- Thomas Heming was shaped by a valuable apprenticeship to the Huguenot gold and silversmith Peter Archambo, starting in 1738. In 1760, he rose to prominence from his appointment as the Principal Goldsmith to the King (George III). He held this position until a year before he retired in 1782- Thomas Heming was initially succeeded by his son, George Heming, and subsequently by family generations. Their business prospered from regular royal patronage with several Mayfair addresses, including Bond Street and Conduit Street (Note: Early trades’ directory indicates Joseph Heming was operating at 28 Conduit Street by 1891) - For over 270 years, Heming has built its reputation as a leading British jeweller and received additional Royal Appointments. They are renowned for their innovative and finely crafted classic and contemporary designs - Heming is still in operation today in the heart of London’s West End—a short stroll from Thomas Heming’s original workshop MEASUREMENTS- Length: Approx. 46.8 mm- Width: Approx. 46.8 mm- Height: Approx. 37.4 mm- The ring slot can accommodate a ring with a thin to narrow-width band (up to approx. 2.9 mm) CONDITION - Overall, the ring box is in beautiful antique condition and still enjoyable for many more years to come. It bears signs of wear commensurate with age and use. Surfaces have marks and scratches that one would expect in a piece of this age. These ‘imperfections’ add character to the piece rather than take away from it- There is wear/loss to the leather, including discolouration, scuffs, two small pin holes in the base, and a small crack in the leather/ring box (located at the back of the ring box near the hinge/on the right-hand side of the ring box by the silk hinge cover)- The interior is clean and does not have any unpleasant scent- There is light wear to the silk- There is some wear/loss to the velvet, including discolouration - The hinge, catch, and push-button work well.
