Description: Antique, heavily cast Qing Dynasty bronze censer that rests on four integral corner supports and flanked by a pair of angular handles with pendent ends. "The form of this rectangular censer is likely to have originated in the concept of tian yuan, di fang, ‘round sky and square earth’ which was prevalent throughout Chinese art and architecture but would have found particular resonance in the ritual and scholarly use associated with incense burning. The shape is known in Chinese as a macaolu or a ‘trough’-form censer referring to the similarity in form to the troughs used to feed horses." Featured is I believe an apocryphal 6 character Xuande seal mark within a rectangle cast on the base. The censer measures~ 5 3/8" long including handles x 3" wide x 2 1/2" tall. It weighs 45.6 oz. In beautiful condition with some light surface wear and oxidation on the inside. Stunning golden patina. A superb collectible piece! This piece came out of an Estate in Alexandria Virginia and belonged to a Politician who had a massive Asian collection.
