Description: AQUITANIA (1914) She was built by John Brown & Co., Ltd., Glasgow, Scotland for the Cunard Line as a 45,647 GT ship with dimensions of 868'x97'. Quadruple-screw, 24 knots, steam turbines, two masts and four funnels. She had passenger accommodations for 597 first 614 second and 2,052 third class. Launched April 23, 1913 and her maiden voyage was Liverpool-New York on May 30, 1914. Converted to an armed merchant cruiser in August 1914. Served as a hospital ship 1915-1919. She was later put in service as a troopship. Returned to regular passenger service in June 1919, ports being Southampton-Cherbourg-New York. From1939 to 1948 was used as a troopship. Returned to Cunard Line service in May 1948. Her first trans-Atlantic voyage was in Nov. 1949. Broken up for scrap in Gareloch in 1950. PASSENGER SHIPS OF THE PAST AND PRESENT by Eugene W. Smith
