Description: 1957 $1 Silver Certificate, Fr 1619PCGS CHOICE NEW 63 PPQAND IT'S COURTESY AUTOGRAPHED BY A MEMBER OF THE ASSAY COMMISSION: PAUL J MAGUIRE / NEW YORK ASSAYERI bought these notes in 2013 from a fellow collector... and although I've been continuously looking since then (these were part of my personal collection), I haven't been able to find more of them. So I'm not sure if there are more of them out there somewhere... or how many, if there are... or if they're one of a kind? But combined with the information below about the Assay Commission Medals, I'm going to guess that there probably aren't all that many Assay Commission Autographed 1957 $1 Silver Certificates out there besides these. However, they are/were in consecutive order... and I'm missing some... so there has to at least be some others still out there somewhere, if they haven't been lost or destroyed.AND for those who aren't familiar with what the Assay Commission was:The Mint Act of 1792 authorized the United States Assay Commission, which was an agency of the U.S. federal government from 1792 to 1980. Beginning in 1797, members of the Assay Commission met in most years at the Philadelphia Mint, with their function being to ensure that the weight and fineness of silver and gold coins (and in later years base metal coins) issued the previous year were minted to specifications. In 1971, the commission met, but for the first time had no gold or silver to test, due to the end of gold coinage first, and then later silver coinage, being minted. Beginning in 1977, President Jimmy Carter appointed no members of the public to the commission, and in 1980 he signed legislation abolishing it. Although some members were designated by statute, for the most part the commissioners, which were freshly appointed each year, consisted of prominent Americans, including numismatists. Members received no compensation, but appointment to the Assay Commission was eagerly sought after, in part because commissioners received a commemorative medal. These medals, first issued in 1860 and different each year, are extremely rare, since none are believed to have been issued in a quantity of greater than 200, and in most years fewer than 50 were struck. The exception is the 1977 issue, which was sold to the general public. Please read the additional information below. If you do not request an Invoice Total and you go ahead and pay for your items, then I can only assume that you weren't interested in the Combined Shipping Discount. And while I always try to be as fair as possible with what I charge for shipping, unfortunately it's NOT cheap to ship things anymore - especially when things like insurance and signature confirmation are involved.
