Description: ATOMIC BOMB "STAMP" - TYPE #3 HISTORY: In 1994, the U.S. Postal Service planned to issue a stamp commemorating the conclusion of WWII through the use of atomic bombs in 1945. This stamp was to be part of the final series of stamps to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of WWII. After protests from Japanese government officials and intervention by President Clinton, the U.S. Postal Service reluctantly rescinded the planned atomic bomb stamp and replaced it with one of President Truman. This is the only time in history that a commemorative stamp was rescinded by the U.S. Postal Service. Ironically, the announcement was made public by the White House on December 7, 1994, exactly 53 years to the day after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor. This commemorative atomic bomb poster stamp was created by a private party in place of the originally-planned stamp and is not valid for postage.
