Each handset registers to the base unit. Once registered, the handset(s) and base unit do not forget. The information is stored in non-volatile ram. You can unplug the base from power, or remove the battery from the handset, with no effect. You can leave them lying around for a month, and they will still be registered together. This becomes important when you replace pieces. If the base unit quits, the handset(s) will become orphaned. It will have a warning similar to: "Out of range or base no power". That means the handset can't contact the base unit. If you replace the base unit it you need to deregister all handsets then register the handset(s). If a handset quits, you can register a replacement to the base unit. Each base unit can manage a finite quantity of handsets (see your manual). If the base unit was full and one of the handsets quits, you will have to deregister all handsets, then reregister all handsets to the base unit. To deregister an orphaned handset: Press menu/select, --then-- "the code", then menu/select. There are two possible codes, so you may have to try both. Once it accepts the code, the phone will beep, reboot and give instructions on registering. There are two "codes". There seems to be no rhyme nor reason on which works, but the older models seem to use the latter. If your model phone lacks a menu/select button hit cancel a few times, dial the code then softkey1 (left side below display). *7890# *331734# i.e. menu/select---then--- *331734# --- then menu/select To deregister all handsets If any are working, it would be a good idea to review the handset names and decide if you want to rename anything (menu select, scroll within settings). You can't rename a handset until after it is registered. Gather up all the phones you are going to reregister. You will go thru the process for each phone. That involves pushing a button on the base each time. So do it there. The procedure: At the base station locate the "In Use" LED and locate the "Find Handset" or "Handset Locator" button. Press and hold the "Handset Locator" button for 10 seconds until the "In Use" led is blinking. Release and repress the "Handset Locator" button. The base station should beep. It will take 30 seconds or so before any working handsets realize they were given the boot. If your base station has a display the process is the same. After about 5 seconds it will display register but keep holding down the handset locator button. After 10 seconds it will display deregister. At that point you can either hit the button that has a line to the deregister area of the screen --- or --- you can hit the handset locator again. It will beep and let you know it has deregistered all phones. To register a phone: Press the "Handset Locator" button for 4 seconds until the "In Use" led blinks, then release. On the cordless handset press the # button. Don't put in cradle until it registers! Restated---bad idea to register on a weak battery. At this point you can rename the phone in settings if you like.
