Their family began to be supported by Chandler's uncle, a successful lawyer. In 1900, Chandler received a classical education at Dulwich College in London. In 1907, he took English citizenship in order to enter the civil service. Soon after, he joined the British Admiralty. However, he did not like the civil service profession, Chandler quit and worked as a journalist for the Daily Express and Western Gazette. He did not achieve much success either as a journalist or as a poet (Chandler tried himself in romantic poetry at that time). In order to somehow earn a living, Chandler took up the pen again - but he did not write poetry, but detective stories for cheap magazines. The first story, "Blackmailers Don't Shoot", was published in the magazine "Black Mask" in 1933; the first novel, "The Big Sleep", was published in 1939. After that, the novels "Farewell, My Love" (1940), "The High Window" (1942), "The Girl in the Lake" (1943) were published. On the wave of success, Chandler was invited to Hollywood as a screenwriter, where he co-authored the script for the film Double Indemnity (1944) with Billy Wilder. Later, he independently wrote the script for the film The Blue Dahlia (1946). Chandler also took part in creating the script for the film Strangers on a Train (1951) by Alfred Hitchcock. In 1954, the author's wife, Cissy Chandler, died. During the illness preceding her death, Chandler wrote the novel The Long Goodbye (1954). The loneliness that followed the death of his wife leads him to clinical depression, and he begins to drink heavily again, which affects the quality of his works. In 1955, he attempted suicide. In 1956, he again took US citizenship, after which he went on a trip to Europe. Returning home, in 1959 he fell ill with pneumonia and died in the hospital. Buried in San Diego Cemetery. Book 3 Crime fiction master Raymond Chandler’s third novel featuring Philip Marlowe, the “quintessential urban private eye” (Los Angeles Times).
