The Indian species, Santalum alba, is the most well known form, but is now endangered due to aggressive harvesting practices, and the essential oil supply is very limited and expensive. Australian sandalwood, Santalum spicatum, is wild or plantation-grown and ethically harvested, with sustainability practices monitored closely by the Australian government. The aromatic profile of the Australian species is similar to that of the Indian species. AROMATHERAPY & MEDICINAL USES: Sandalwood has been used in religious and social ceremonies for millennia, and is still used to facilitate meditation, move through stages of grief, and encourage creativity. It is also used to aid in cases of depression and anxiety, and is an effective aphrodisiac. It may help in some cases of insomnia. In Ayurveda, sandalwood is used to calm excess Pitta. Traditional Chinese medicine uses sandalwood to cool inflamed conditions of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and pulmonary systems. SKINCARE USES: Sandalwood is a mild astringent, and has antibacterial qualities. It is also anti-inflammatory, and can be useful for certain skin irritations like acne and eczema. Red sandalwood powder, which comes from a completely different family of trees than sandalwood oil, is used as a mild exfoliant and skin brightener. THINGS TO KNOW: High Grade Sandalwood essential oil is harvested when the trees are over 30 years old. The oil has been used in perfumery for over 2000 years and is generally considered safe during pregnancy. Sandalwood trees are parasitic in nature, meaning that they derive some or all of their nutrients from the roots of other living plants. As you can imagine, this makes it all the more difficult to grow, as you have to provide adequate host plants in addition to the sandalwood trees themselves. High Grade Australian Sandalwood oil is described as dry, sweet, slightly terpenic top note, lactonic heart, with slight hay aspects, very woody, balsamic base, very tenacious, sweet dry down note. HG Australian Sandalwood is a clear bright oil and is a little viscous like honey. Sandalwood oil was used as a medical treatment in Europe until after World War II when antibiotics came into use. Sandalwood essential oil has remained an oil of use among aromatherapists in Australia and around the world. In the last decade, the pioneering of a high quality Sandalwood essential oil has been undertaken and finally developed in south west Western Australia. The Sandalwood oil we sell has the highest santalol content of any Australian Sandalwood oil produced in Australia, being at least 25% alpha santalol and closer to 30%. One important step in developing the best HG Sandalwood essential oil is using the best part of the tree to harvest. Older trees with lots of heartwood is the key. It was found that the best part of the tree were the bigger logs and lower the parts of the tree, this included the root parts as well. Santalol levels measured in leaves and high branches was as low as 5%. Santalol levels in root parts could be as high as 38%. Low grade Sandalwood comes from distilling the smaller high limbs and leaves. Different regions of Western Australia produce populations of Sandalwood with different levels of santalols and other constituents like farnesol and alpha-bisabolol which have great antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. This suggests Western Australian Sandalwood essential oil is better for theraputic use while East Indian Sandalwood essential oil is coveted in the perfume industry. North central Western Australia produces the highest quality of Sandalwood trees which contain a highly aromatic and high quality Sandalwood essential oil. It is from this region where our superior quality Sandalwood is sourced. The population is entirely harvested and managed by an indigenous community. Distillation Expertise The final process, is as important as any, the distillation process of our unique, superior grade Sandalwood oil has been developed over many trials over a decade. Sandalwood Essential Oil is steam distilled from the billets and chips that come off of the heartwood of the tree, and is used in many household items. It can also be extracted from the sapwood, but it will be a significantly lower quality. Over 90% of the essential oil is sesquiterpenic alcohols. It’s a warm, rich, and aromatically ‘woody’ oil. Sandalwood essential oil is steam distilled to create a pale yellow, clear, thick liquid that is used by aromatherapists all over the world to treat bronchitis, chapped and dry skin, depression, oily skin, stress, and much more. Sandalwood essential oils is also believed to create an exotic, sensual mood and has a reputation as being sensual, which may be why it has been used in the perfume industry and body care products for a very long time. I use only the darkest amber bottles available which helps in keep the sunlight from affecting the oil. I also only sell 5ml bottles to help reduce the effects of oxygenation when the bottle get close to empty. 15ml or 30ml bottles have a lot of air in the bottle as the oil is used, which can lead to oxidation of the oil. A 5ml bottle has less air as the oil is used. I also use inexpensive labels to keep the cost down, after all, you are buying the oil, not the label. All of my oils are sourced from a supplier in Australia with over 20 years of growing, harvesting and distilling experience. I have been in the essential oil industry over 5 years and just started focusing on Essential Oils from down-under. I have half a dozen different Australian based oils I will be offering and will be adding more as supply allows. If multiple bottle purchases, then I can give discounts. G'day
