Description: Austria-Hungary: Karl Medal for Military Merit, 1917-1918. Silver medal instituted on April 28, 1917, during the reign of Austro-Hungarian emperor Karl. The “Signum Laudis” medal was awarded only to officers for outstanding merit that did not warrant the Cross of Military Merit; it could also be awarded with swords on the ribbon for outstanding service in direct contact with the enemy (see von Falkenstien, Joseph; Imperial Austrian Medals and Decorations (1972) pp. 166-167; Lussier, Richard; Journal of the Orders and Medals Society of America (September-October 2020)pp. 22-27). The medal is in better than very fine condition, with some light scratches on the obverse background; engraver-marked KAUTSCH; on worn original military ribbon. Unlike the articulated crown of the Franz Joseph Medal for Military Merit, the two crowns of the Karl version were all made as an integral part of the medal. Authenticity guaranteed; 14-day return privilege (30 days overseas), excluding postage, provided item is returned in same condition when sold. Item will be shipped USPS First Class Mail; will combine postage for multiple purchases.
