Description: Authentic & Original WWII Shin Gunto Japanese Officers Sword During World War II, Japanese Officers carried swords like this as a symbol of authority. A sword like this gave the officer command pressence. Many officers were from old Samurai families and sometimes their swords displayed the family Mon. Note the Mon on the fuchi of this sword. To see a family crest like this is not very common and is almost always associated with a better blade. Many officers retrofitted an older family blade into Shin Gunto koshirae, like in this example. The blade is definitely older than WWII; probably later Shinto Period (1700-1800s). Careful examination shows very tight ko-mokume hada and dark jigane. The hamon is sugaha based with bright white konie making up the nioiguchi. Nijuba is seen, yet subtle. The boshi is ichimai. This type of boshi is not very common and narrows kantei options down quite a bit. The blade has scratches and a few areas of light oxidation. It looks like someone used it for tameshigiri. There are no fatal flaws and the blade is very healthy. This blade is definitely worthy of restoration. The blade is mumei (unsigned). It looks Hizen judging by the jigane. But, I think Horikawa is a better call judging by the boshi. Horikawa kunihiro was known to produce super tight, almost muji hada. It is a very nice sword, whoever made it. Nagasa: (Length of blade) 69.5 cm. The all original Shin Gunto Officer's mount is upgraded with family crest and is in excellent condition. If you are looking for a great Shin Gunto for your collection, this is it. I do not condone the use of this sword for use outside of collecting. It is authentic nihonto and very sharp and dangerous.
