Afterwards, he became a charter member of the Grand Army post In Guilford, and was Its commander for years. He has served with great brilliancy in both branches of the general assembly, and was Speaker of the House in 1877. Years afterward, he was the republican leader on the floor of the House, and added to his reputation as a parliamentarian and political manager. The list of his services as a publicist has greatly enriched the state and the general statutes are full of theevidences of his work." The scrap of paper is about 4" by 5.5".It is from the outer wrapping of a letter or package that appears to have been mailed in 1899. It is now held within a clear plastic sleeve, for protection. This is a "Free Frank" autograph; that is, a signature used on a letter in place of a postage stamp. Note that the mark ofpostal cancellation was placed by the post office almost directly on top of Judge Harrison's signature. Political office holders in many countries have held "Free Franking" privileges as one of the rights of their office for manydecades. The political custom of "Free Franking" appears to have begun in England in the 1650s. Please see the scans for more information. Shipping within the USA is FREE via USPS First Class Mail.
