Description: Offered here is the May 1970 issue of Avant Garde magazine, issue #12. It features some great content including the art of Danish artists Jorgen Boberg and a photo essay by African American photographer Hugh Bell. It's in good condition with some cover wear and age toning along the page edges. There is one page with two small bits clipped out (see last photo). Avant Garde was published from January 1968 through July 1971 and was the brainchild of Ralph Ginzburg, the author, editor, publisher, and photo-journalist who was best well-known for publishing books and magazines on erotica and art and for his conviction in 1963 for violating federal obscenity laws. Reflecting the time in which it was published, the magazine was filled with creative imagery often caustically critical of American society and government, sexual themes, and (for the time) crude language. The magazine had a modest circulation but was extremely popular in certain circles, including New York's advertising and editorial art directors. Please check my other listings for additional issues. Shipping charges will be combined/reduced for multiple purchases.
