Ayer’s Sarsaparilla, introduced in 1859, was the Dr. J.C. Ayer & Company of Lowell, Massachusetts’s largest success. Ayer touted his compound extract of sarsaparilla as a blessing that “purifies the blood and invigorates the system.” It was prepared using a mixture of sarsaparilla root, stillingia, yellow dock, and mandrake, mixed with iodides of potassium and iron. The list of illnesses for which this compound was used is staggering. Ayer’s Sarsaparilla allegedly offered cures for at least 25 conditions, including: scrofula, tetter, ringworm, sores, boils, pimples, ulcers, impurities of the blood, liver complaints, female weaknesses, jaundice, dyspepsia, and rheumatism; as well as promoting energy and strength and improving the intellect.
