When a band names their first album Living Legends and poses for the front cover in the midst of a '60s-vintage gold record presentation ceremony, it's safe to assume a high irony factor. Germany's Backwood Creatures heightens the humor by including songs like "You Definitely Suck" (a Queers-like highlight, with the catchiest chorus on the whole album) and "Rock 'n' Roll Is Lame" (which unfortunately is a lot weaker than such a combative title can withstand), but unlike a lot of similar bands -- the Queers, the Riverdales, the Mr. T Experience, Screeching Weasel, the Methadones, and most of the rest of the mid-'90s pop-punk bands come immediately to mind -- the jokes are never the main point. This five-piece prefers to focus on playing stripped-down, garage-inspired pop-punk tunes (11 solid originals by guitarist Nilz Nonchalant and a ramalama singalong cover of the Misfits' gorefest "Skulls") with no pretension and a surfeit of rough-edged hooks.
