Description: Civil War Store Card for Ruggles S. Torrey, Beekeeper and Inventor of the Maine State Beehive in BangorFuld ME100A-2a (copper) R-3 EF Details Scarce Single State MerchantAs noted on his store cards, Mr. Ruggles was the inventor of the Maine State Beehive patented in 1859. His beehive was widely exhibited within the United States in the decade after its introduction. The store cards were acquired from two different vendors. This token was possibly obtained from Scovill Manufacturing in Waterbury, CT. It is scarce. A second token with a similar obverse design and different reverse was obtained from Shubael Childs in Chicago. That token is very scarce. These tokens are popular, not only due to the connection to beehives, but also because these are the only store card tokens issued in Maine during the Civil War. This is a decent specimen which has been assigned a details grade due to dark residues in the protected areas of the design.Shipping is free. Should this token fail to meet your expectations, it can be returned within 30 days for a full refund. Sales tax, if applicable, is collected by Ebay and submitted directly to state authorities. We appreciate your business!
