Description: Up for sale is a very rare item from the San Francisco based company of Will & Finck and I believe it was made in 1886. Some quick back history: The Will & Finck company was a cutlery firm established by Frederick Will and Julius Finck. They actively ran their business from 1864 to 1932 and they maintained an exceptional reputation. By 1880, they were advertising in 12 categories including barbers' supplies, comb makers, corkscrew manufacturers, dentists' materials and instruments, cutlers', electrical apparatus manufacturers, faro materials, ivory goods, locksmiths, surgical instruments, and truss manufacturers. A wood handled "paddle-like" strop that uses the same concept as a flexible strip of leather used to sharpen barber razors and tool blades in the 1800's, this unique piece has a leather wrapped cushion used to sharpen blades on mounted on a piece of wood, and the entire thing is underneath a sandpaper sheath cover. The sandpaper cover has a sticker done in black ink on a letterpress - a very clever way to advertise, these words are as best as we can identify: W&F - Razor - Golden Gate - Strop Barber Style Manufacturers of Cutlery, Barbers' Supplies and Toilet Requisites 820 Market Street and 23 O'Farrell Street, San Francisco Condition is used— (over 100 years old!) of course and there are some nicks in the leather and wood piece, and the outside is damaged. 17.5" long and 2" wide. Shipping will be free on this item - we will ship USPS priority within the U.S. I found this very rare and unique piece in Carson City, Nevada and were thrilled to discover it!
