Description: Barcalo Manufacturing was founded in the late 19th century as a maker of metal bed frames and cribs. After its acquisition, in 1914, of the Charles E. Hall Company, a manufacturer of adjustable wrenches, pliers and other similar tools, Barcalo became a leading producer of tools by taking over Hall’s lines of “plyers”, as they were called back then, and adjustable wrenches. Barcalo was producing carbon-steel, open-end wrenches by the 1920s. Their early design had depressed panels with forged-in markings. A small depressed panel showed the fractional size at each end. Several finish options were offered for the open-end wrenches; black rust-proof, cadmium plating, and satin nickel plating with polished ends. These Wrenches are two of the sizes found in Barcalo’s 6-Piece set, 4706R, produced between 1931 and 1933. The Set was cadmium plated and the Wrenches bear some evidence of such plating (see images). They are well used but show no evidence of misuse or abuse. There are three small owner-made notches on the outer edge of the 1/2 Inch end of the larger Wrench (see images). The Wrenches could be put to work. They would, also, serve well as evidence of the high quality tools produced by Barcalo and other manufacturers in the early 20th Century. Aggressive polishing of the Wrenches is unwise even though little cadmium plating remains. Research well before polishing! We will ship the Wrench by USPS Ground Advantage on the next regular business day following receipt of payment.
