Description: Offered is Type Specimen Book No.9* , Barnhart Bros. & Spindler Type Founders Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. This Volume No 9 * was printed and issued in 1907. This book is complete and contains a large variety of 'superior copper-mixed types'.. Includes some 200 pages of decorative ornaments, borders, "cuts," corners, and initials. There is also an illustrated section of wood type, supplies, printing presses and other equipment, and price-lists. This book was issued in 1907 in 4 variations, No 9, 9*, 9**, & 9*** perhaps a means of targeting trade specific needs. This volume came from the estate of a hobbyist letterpress printer and rare book collector. This volume, as the front of the cover suggests by the label securely attached to its front cover, was owned by an early 20th century Printing Supply Co. in Seattle and therefore was spared the wear and tear and smeared ink of daily life in the printers shop. History of BB&SIn 1869, the brothers Alson E., Arthur Middleton, George W., and Warren Barnhart purchased the Great Western Type Foundry.[1] They subsequently incorporated as Barnhart Brothers & Spindler. It was a successful foundry known for innovative type design and well designed type catalogs. Oz Cooper, Will Ransom, Robert Wiebking, and Sidney Gaunt all designed for BB&S. It was bought out by American Type Founders in 1911 with the proviso that the merger would not take effect for twenty years, so that the employees would have a chance to find new work or retire. The foundry closed in 1933. Wikipedia describes the extensive list of face types produced by BB&S up through the first quarter of the 20th century. Condition: GoodDue to the nature of its use as a "workhorse" in the daily workings of the trade, this is a hard to find a type specimen book in such nice condition. This volume shows shelf ware and handling that would be expected for its age. There is some soiling and rubbing of the red oxide colored covers and an owners label was placed on the front (very securely) back in the day, (to make sure someone did not put it in their pocket?) There is slight fraying to cloth cover along the edges, as well as head and tail of spine. The front lower corner has be met with impact in the span of its life and the front has started to wrinkle (see photos) however the wrinkling does not penetrate to the back of the front cover. (Please see the photo with brown and cream print cover lining...that is the inside of the front cover) Interior pages are clean and intact and clearly escaped daily use by the hands of a busy printer. (The exception is a tipped in section of several pages of a different paper, one of those pages has a spot of discoloration that has not yet bled into the pages behind it). Hinges and spine strong and intact with square text base. There is a bookplate attached to the inside cover of another previous owner. Please review photos for condition. Questions welcome.
