His exact place of birth is not known, but some believe he could have been born in Canada, or possibly Illinois. He later changed his name to William Barkley Masterson and was nicknamed "Bat". Bat Masterson was a buffalo hunter, army scout, gunfighter, gambler and lawman. In 1872, at the age of 19, he first met Wyatt Earp while both men were hunting buffalo on the Salt Fork of the Arkansas. They soon parted, not meeting up again until 1876 in Dodge City , Kansas. Bat was part of the small party of hunters who stood off 500 Comanches at the Adobe Walls fight in the Texas Panhandle. After surviving the seige, he signed on with the Army as a civilian scout. In 1876, at Sweetwater , Texas , Bat was caught up in a fight over a dance hall girl named Molly Brennan. He killed a military officer named King , and was wounded in the process. After he recuperated, Bat visited his brother in Dodge City and took a job offer as deputy under Marshal Wyatt Earp. In 1877 , Bat Masterson bought an interest in the Lone Star Dance Hall and was soon elected sheriff of Ford County where his brother Ed Masterson was marshal of Dodge City. Until 1879, he was busy with horse thieves, train robbers, murderers and Indian raiders. Bat spent many nights gambling with poker pals Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp. In 1880, he made a living at cards and faro after he lost his bid for re-election. He then followed Wyatt Earp , the Earp brothers and Doc Holliday to Tombstone , Arizona. After a brief stay, in April 1881 he traveled back to Dodge City in response to his younger brother, Jim, Dodge's marshal and co-owner of a dancehall. Bat left just before the O.K. Corral incident.
