Additional information. This engraving comes from the First French edition of “De Nassausche Oorloghen” published by Colin in 1616. It is dedicated to the King of England, James I Stuart. The Eighty Years' War: rallied to the Holy Roman Empire under the reign of Charles V (1500-1558), the United Dutch Provinces revolted against the Spanish yoke upon the inauguration of Philip II of Spain. In October 1576, the rebel troops (composed of nearly 20,000 men) entered the city, whose governors had opened the gates to them, and took position to attack the castle defended by the Spanish troops commanded by Sancho d 'Avila.
