Description: Battle of Palestro Commemoration: Italian Army - 15th Infantry Regimen: The Piedmontese troops of King Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy on May 30, 1859 conquered Palestro and some neighboring municipalities near Vercelli . Their purpose was to cover a large maneuver of the allied French army, commanded by Napoleon III of France , which took place further north and aimed at Milan. The following day the Austrians of General Fredrick Zobel tried to regain the lost positions and were driven back to Palestro by Enrico Cialdini's 4th Piedmontese Division effectively supported by the 3rd French Zouaves Regiment. The Franco-Piedmontese victory of May 31 increased the disorientation of the Austrians and allowed Napoleon III to carry out his maneuver towards Milan. The two battles, that of May 30 and that of May 31, constitute a single war event. However, historiography defines only the decisive battle of the 31st as the battle of Palestro.
