Description: Note that the ivory bowl is a bit lighter in color than appears in the photos. Also, the markings and lighthouse are a more vivid green than the photos portray. This bowl is a rare survivor from the china dishes used by the World Famous, "BEACON DRIVE-IN" restaurant located in Spartanburg, SC, which has been in business since 1946. The bowl was custom manufactured for Beacon in 1956 (July-September) per the 356 date code, by the also famous "Mayer China" Company of Beaver Falls, PA. The "Beacon Drive-In" restaurant was featured in the 1st Episode (11/04/2006) of the TV Series "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives", hosted by Guy Fieri, who traveled to some to the top retro-dining establishments in the United States, visiting diners and drive-ins. All markings (logo, lighthouse on the sea, rope) are in excellent condition. There is one hairline crack which does not detract from the beauty of the piece, but rather provides character and indication of use at the famous restaurant. A fun, collectible, and great example of 1950's advertising, as well as mid-century retro "Drive-In" memorabilia, and Mayer China Company custom craftsmanship piece. A must have, multi-faceted item for any collection. Enjoy!
