Description: This 1964 2LP gatefold promotional issue white label stereo album from Philips Records (PHS 2-920) features performances of several Beethoven sonatas:Sonata No. 1 in F major, Op. 5, No. 1Sonata No. 4 in C major, Op. 102, No. 1Sonata No. 5 in D major, Op. 102, No. 2Sonata No. 2 in G minor, Op. 5, No. 2Sonata No. 3 in A major, Op. 69All are performed by Mstislav Rostropovich (cello) and Sviatoslav Richter (piano). Album notes are in English by Igor Kipnis. This promotional pressing has a large inkstamped "PROMOTIONAL COPY" on the back cover, a small collection index sticker on its upper right corner (see Photo 2), and the white label records inside all carry "For Broadcast Only" notations. (Photos 5-8) The inner sleeve for Sides 1 & 2 has splits along all edges due to the sharp edges of the record, but we have left it in place as it appears to be original. The inner sleeve for Sides 3 & 4 does not match it, and appears to be an older replacement. Side 1 has a noisy background and might benefit from further deep cleaning. The remaining sides are somewhat better, but this album is not in mint condition, and is of more interest as a promotional example. It obviously had a lot of airplay in its day. This is one of many titles from an extensive collection of classical LPs and CDs that we will be listing here. All have been carefully stored for many years and played only on premium equipment.
