From Royal Museums Greenwich: Published by the Belgian Nautical Research Association for 25 years from 1950 – 1975, the periodical contains content in English, French and Flemish covering merchant and combat fleets. Along with the standard Association treasury and membership notices, club news and book reviews, the articles and ship lists within the issues contain wealth of helpful information. The content was generated by members of the Association and reflects their areas of interest – which is by no means limited to Belgian vessels, as the name of the periodical may initially lead you to believe! By the end of the publication’s run in 1975, The Belgian Shiplover had amassed over 725 fleet listings. The Belgian Nautical Research Association is a publication devoted to authoritative technical, operational, and career detail on the world’s naval and merchant ships. Printed only for the use of society members, never numbering more than a few hundred persons. The journal was published during 1949 to 1975, founded by the late Paul E. R. Scarceriaux. His wife and a few devoted associates (including the late Christian de Saint Hubert, tragically killed a few years later) strove to sustain the society and the journal after M. Scarceriaux’s death (17 March 1975), ultimately without success. International membership included many of the most well-known naval and merchant shipping enthusiasts of the day, people such as Erich Groener, Henri Le Masson, Rene Greger, Eric Lacroix, Arrigo Barilli, and others. Much of this data represents the result of unique independent research, and some even today cannot be found elsewhere in print. Dr. Lacroix’s programmatic history of the Imperial Japanese Navy in TBS remains the best history of building programs in print, over 40 years later, for example. The chief attribute of the journal was the creation of lists, either lists of all vessels of a particular nation’s navy, or all the vessels of an individual shipping company, all with their key career events and final fate accounted for. A number of these lists remain the best and only source of such fundamental information available. The journal reached its highest point in the 1960s. Issue No.85.
