Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) BEN NEVIS. Ben Nevis is well known as the highest mountain (4,400 feet) within the British Isles, and nearly a fourth part higher than Snowdon, the next most celebrated peak in Britain, though many in Scotland surpass the latter altitude. Monarch as he is, however, most people find Ben Nevis disappointing he does not produce a full impression of his immense height and mass. There is an observatory on the summit, and a temperance hotel; and horse or pony track extends the entire distance, so that ascents are constant. On a clear day the prospect extends in many directions for a hundred miles, but is not so good as from some other peaks less surrounded by other mountains. On the north side are terrific precipices, from which the snow rarely disappears even in summer. Our view is taken from Banavie.
