His paintings were, according to his own declarations, idea paintings, content paintings, communication paintings. And yet, again according to his own account, they were a constant pilgrimage in search of self, an unremitting effort to find and formulate the visible corollary of inner mood and passion. The purpose of this book is to furnish a panoramic view of Ben Shahn's art; to provide the visual experience of a broad coverage. There is another purpose; to place a balanced emphasis on that period of his career when imaginative horizons were most far flung and when at the same time was most most productive in terms of output. The 373 pages included in this volume include many black and white, and full color works, each unique. It is also a comprehensive narrative of Shahn's life and the influences on his art. This is a very fascinating volume about the life and art of a remarkable artist of the twentieth century!
