After more than one hundred years as a Moravian church~village Bethlehem became a borough and was opened to the outside world. This happened as pioneers of industry began developing the natural resources of the valley and preceded by about a decade Asa Packer's building of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Metallic zinc and zinc oxide, pig iron and iron rails, slate and, later, cement and steel moved from the valley to other parts of the world. Wealth and new sorts of people flowed in to found, populate and enrich the boroughs of South and West Bethlehem, Fountain Hill and Northampton Heights. 400 glossy illustrations of which more than 125 are in full color. 362 pages. Map endpapers. The book has some edge wear. The bottom spine end is beginning to fray. The DJ is quite rough along the edges. Spine ends and corners are chipped as well.
