FIRST ISSUE OF THIS SENSATIONAL FIND of an UNPUBLISHED Bettini CylinderLieutenant Gianni Bettini, who had experimented with and improved existing recording apparatus, and Lionel Mapleson, the Librarian of the Metropolitan Opera Company. Bettini used his society connections to persuade various singers to record for him, and beginning in 1899 published catalogues listing available recordings. Early in 1900, Mapleson bought an Edison ‘Home’ phonograph and was given a Bettini recorder and reproducer by the cellist Leo Stern and his wife, soprano Suzanne Adams. Mapleson actually brought his cylinder machine into the prompter’s box at the Met and proceeded to record brief selections from live performances during the 1900–1901 season. He continued this practice for two more seasons, using a larger recording horn from another position high above the stage.A Bettini cylinder of Sembrich singing the first part of Johann Strauss’s ‘Voci di Primavera’ was discovered in a hotel loft in New Zealand. It is believed to have been recorded in his New York laboratories in 1900. Notwithstanding certain technical defects that cause an odd bubbling sound at times, the recording is clear and the sound resonates in a highly reverberant chamber. In this bravura display piece the timbre of Sembrich’s voice sounds somewhat darker than it did on later recordings, but her dazzling fioriture are secure and radiant.Marcella Sembrich, Johann Strauss Jr. – Voci Di PrimaveraLabel: Primo Records – P1001Format: Vinyl, 7", 45 RPM, Single Sided, Transcription, MonoCountry: New ZealandReleased: 1965Genre: ClassicalStyle: OperaA Voci Di PrimaveraComposed By – Johann Strauss Jr.Liner Notes – William MainRecorded By – Gianni BettiniTranscribed from an original 5" diameter wax cylinder as recorded by Gianni BettiniReverse side label stamped:Distributed in U.S.A. by Stanford Archive Of Recorded SoundThe Knoll, Stanford, Calif. 94305Price $1.50 post paidMatrix / Runout (A side matrix): L01643FIRST ISSUE of the New Zealand Bettini Cylinder 7" 45 rpm Single Mono recordwith original Bettini announcement Includes single sheet of notes written by William Main, January 1965 Condition: NEAR Mint, great sound, great transfer More Great Records on sale right now: CLICK ON THIS LINK TO SEE MORE GREAT RECORDS CLICK ON THIS LINK TO SEE ALL ITEMS - VINTAGE BOOKS, VICTROLA and TURNTABLE ITEMS, CDs, Books and DVDs http://shop.ebay.com/carsten_sf/m.html ==== A Quick NOTE ON GRADING AND SHIPPING: As you can see from my feedback, I try hard to earn your POSITIVE FEEDBACK and FIVE STAR RATINGS. If for any reason your transaction was NOT SATISFACTORY, pls contact me and I will work something out with you. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A REASON TO GIVE ME A NEGATIVE RATING or a LOW STAR RATING. Quick note on grading: The Grade (Excellent to Poor, I don't give Mint) refers to the WEAR of the record. Any other defects are stated separately When I listen to a record, I may also give it an aural grade (again E to P), and make a SUBJECTIVE judgment of the pressing quality for hiss and surface noise."EXCEPTIONALLY QUIET" is close to noiseless, like a vinyl pressing."VERY QUIET" is an above average quiet record for a given pressing."Quiet" is a record that is a great example with some noise. These judgments are SUBJECTIVE and will depend one the styli, phonograph etc. you use on your own equipment. Multiple item shipping: I am happy to combine items for shipment in one parcel.
