Why not go for some fun and sightseeing next door in Ohio? Cincinnati didn’t really count anymore and King’s Island was well.. King’s Island. We have to venture deeper into the heart of the Buckeye State. Columbus sounded good and Grove City was the destination due to our curiosity of a phenomenon known as “The TWINS” of Beulah Park. CULT following? What was the hype all about? Only one way to find out. Walking into Beulah Park reminded us of Lexington’s old Red Mile ground floor back in the 80’s. The feel of the facility also resembled the old Fairmount Park in Collinsville, Illinois just across the river from St. Louis, Missouri. To be honest, ground floors on these type of facilities do not vary much. Remember Louisville Downs in Louisville, Kentucky back in the day? Make no mistake, Grove City was truly small town USA and a wholesomeness not really found anywhere else except in population centers around 25,000 or less. Nowhere near the crowds of Keeneland but that’s quite alright. There’s an unspoken charm and appeal about the racetracks of yesteryear to which we must always pay respect. Thoroughbred racing is a small community so why not get to know thy neighbor? Love thy neighbor. ✨ Much to our delight, the simulcast menu was solid and the TWINS were terrific ambassadors. He hired two young, attractive women who had been working as mutuel clerks to host the simulcast show, and they became an instant brand and industry-wide phenomenon… but all-sources wagering almost doubled within two years, no doubt the result of older men in simulcast parlors paying closer attention to the Beulah signal.Katie and Jenna were the names of “The Beulah Twins,” whose seductive images were shown in Playboy (a bikini spread, that is) and were featured in numerous mainstream media outlets. They even had their own twin bobblehead.“There’s no doubt they are noticed,” Weiss said in a 1999 article in the New York Daily News, “and our off-track numbers have gone up significantly. I can’t say it’s 100 percent because of them, but they have made people look at our races.”Now known as Katie Ward and Jenna Collins, the twins stopped working at Beulah in 2009. Katie is a stay-at-home mother who lives about a mile from the track, while Jenna works an hour away as a supervisor for the credit-card company Discover in Utica, Ohio.Weiss was at Beulah in 1989 when legendary jockey Bill Shoemaker was on a farewell tour of 48 tracks. “Eddie Arcaro came in to surprise Shoemaker,” Weiss said. “That was a great day.”Other well-known racing figures also made stops at Beulah. Catlaunch a 40-time-winning Ohio-bred, amassed earnings of $1.1 million the hard way, having started 108 times. Racetracks across the country could take a lesson from Beulah’s innovation. They were the first track in Ohio to offer simulcast wagering (1983) and telephone betting (1993). Its novel 25 cent pick 6 wager was a success. Even the simulcast hosts, the Beulah Twins, sparked interest. The jovial buxom bombshells handicapped the races and became a marketing boon. Thomas Heinl, in charge of Beulah’s pari-mutuels from 1975-‘86 is recognized for being among the first to computerize the Totalizator equipment. This revolutionized the way pari-mutuel tickets are sold today While Beulah Park has been the recipient of jabs by the racing industry, it refused to be bullied. Proud Ohio horseman made a living with marginally athletic horses. And how can you knock them? The horses and their caretakers tried their best... The last program at Beulah ended with a $50,000 stakes race won by a long shot. It’s estimated that 5,000 people attended Beulah’s final day. They pushed a meager $90,000 through the betting windows.
