BISHOP FRANCIS RUSSELL NIXON - AUTOGRAPH LETTER FRAGMENT SIGNED - HFSID 81527 FRANCES RUSSELL NIXON The first Bishop of Tasmania signs this slip of paper clipped from the closing of a letter Autograph Letter Fragment Signed: "My dear Sir/ faithfully yours/ F. R. Tasmania/ [line difficult to decipher]" 5x2 slip of paper affixed to a 7x9 sheet. Black and white glossy printed photo of the bishop affixed above slip of paper. Frances Russell Nixon (1803-1879) was the first Bishop of Tasmania. Nixon attended the Merchant Taylor school and St. John's College, Oxford. Not long after graduating, Nixon's oratory abilities were noticed by the Archbishop of Canterbury. He was subsequently appointed as one of the Six Preachers at Canterbury Cathedral. Nixon was named first bishop of Tasmania on August 21, 1842. One of his most widely known publications was his Historical, Doctrinal, and Practical on the Catechism of the Church of England, published in 1843. He also saw published History of Merchant-Taylors' School in 1823, and The Cruise of the Beacon, A Narrative of a Visit to the Islands in Bass's Straits in 1857. Remembered for his generosity, Nixon donate much of his own income to the church, and to education causes. Paper containing signature is slightly toned and rippled from adhesion to sheet.
