It comprised HHT, A, B, C, and D Troops. A, B, and C Troops were air units equipped with OH-6A light observation helicopters for scouting, UH-1H Hueys for transport, and UH-1C gunships for attack (later replaced by AH-1G Cobras). D Troop served as the ground cavalry. Their call signs were: HHT ("Blackhawk," later changed to "King Bird"); A Troop ("Apache"); B Troop ("Dutchmaster"); C Troop ("Sandpiper," changed to "Comanche" in mid-1968); D Troop ("Powder Valley"). After six months of training, the aircraft and advanced party were shipped from California to Vietnam on the USS UPSHUR from mid-January to February 25. They arrived in Vung Tau, Vietnam, and planted their unit colors at Dian on February 26, 1968, becoming fully operational by March 21. In April 1968, the Squadron (except A and B Troops) moved to Vinh Long to support operations in IV Corps (the Delta region). A Troop rejoined on June 10, and B Troop continued operations in III and IV Corps from Di An, attached to the 3rd of the 17th Air Cav. On December 8, B Troop rejoined the Squadron at Vinh Long.
