Artist's Biography: Blanka Tauber, Israeli, born in Czechoslovakia, 1910-1989. Blanka Tauber studied art in Prague and later with Fernand Leger in Paris. In 1937, she visited Palestine and painted the landscape. She was a member of the artists’ associations in Czechoslovakia and Hungary. In 1950, she immigrated to Israel. She lived in Tel Aviv-Jaffa and Netanya before settling in the artists’ colony in Safed. In 1951, she was accepted to the Israel Artists Association and won the Dizengoff Prize. Tauber's early work is characterized by dark colors, an expressionist style and heavy contours. Her later work is more colorful. She mainly painted landscapes. In 1965 she had a solo exhibition of oil Paintings, pastels and drawings at the Theodor Herzl Institute, N.Y., USA. During the 1950s and 1960s, she participated in most of the general exhibitions of Israeli Art that were held mainly at the Tel Aviv Art Museum. Blanka Tauber died in 1989. Blanka Tauber (1910, Somorja, Hungary [now Šamorín, Slovakia] - 1989, Israel) was an Israeli painter born in Slovakia. Biography Tauber was born in the name of Bluma Blanka Tauber in the town of Somorja, then part of the Kingdom of Hungary (now Šamorín in Slovakia). Tauber had five siblings and was the granddaughter of Rabbi David Bischitz, the brother-in-law of the Gaon of Bazach Levona. She received her training in painting and graphic arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and studied later with Andre Lute and Fernand Leger in Paris, after which she returned to Czechoslovakia. She was influenced by Cezanne and Expressionism. In 1937 she visited Palestine (The British Mandate for Palestine), but returned to her family. Later, she was deported with her family to the Auschwitz concentration camp; She and her sister Julia, who served as a doctor in Auschwitz, survived the Holocaust. Her father, brother Yechiel, and her sister's family were murdered in Auschwitz. After the war she returned temporarily to her home and from there moved to Budapest but fled due to anti - Semitism and immigrated to Israel with her sister in March 1950. In Israel she worked in a ceramic factory. In 1951, she exhibited for the first time in Israel a solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Tauber was one of the founders of the Artists' Colony in Safed and lived and worked there for 35 years. She was also a member of the Artists’ Association of Czechoslovakia and Hungary and the Society of Painters and Sculptors in Israel. At the beginning of her work, Tauber painted mainly landscapes, but from 1970 onwards she dealt mainly with the Holocaust. Tauber presented many solo exhibitions, among others: 1935- 1949 in Czechoslovakia (in Bratislava, Brno, and Nitra), Vienna and Budapest. Between 1951 and 1952 she exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and in the years 1952-1970 she exhibited a large number of solo exhibitions in galleries throughout Israel, including: Beit Gordon in Rehovot , Beit HaHalutzim in Netanya, Salon in Haifa, Beit Zvi in Ramat Gan, Yad Lebanim in Petah Tikva and at the Sereni House in Kibbutz Givat Brenner. In 1956-1966 she had solo exhibitions in the United States at the Herzl Institute in New York, in the Jewish community centers of Worcester (MA), and in Baltimore. Blanca Tauber passed away on in 1989 and left her property to her sister. She was buried in the cemetery in Bnei Brak. Her works are in the collections of the Municipal Museum in Bratislava (Slovakia), the Tel Aviv Museum, the Yad Vashem Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
