Description: 1894 Authentic Wildflower Stone ChromolithographBoreal Vetch and Virginia WaterleafSatisfaction Guaranteed This is an authentic 1894 print--NOT a recent reproduction This plate features Boreal (or Blue) Vetch (Vicia Cracca) and Virginia Waterleaf (Hydrophyllum Virginianum [formerly H. Virginiacum]).This pair of illustrations is printed on medium-weight paper. The sheet size is just over 11.5" x 8", and the printed portion within the red border of each of the two pictures is 4" x 6.25", with margins of 1/4" - 1.25" all the way around the sheet to allow easy matting and framing--together or separately. On the reverse of the sheet are the common and scientific names, botanical information about the plants--including some allegorical prose, and more specifics about the flowers. The print is a true stone chromolithograph with the distinctive saturated color and depth, and telltale scattered array of pigment. It is an attractive work, with special attention to detail. This is a plate from the 1894 first edition of: "Wild Flowers of America" prepared by Botanical Fine Art Weekly. "Flowers of Every State in the American Union by a special corps of Artists from the United States and Europe." I've matted and framed several of these, and they look very nice in black or white or contrasting colored mats. Please check my store for other poster, natural history, or historical art prints perfect for framing or incorporating into other projects.A Note on Lithography: One of the delightful and interesting results of the engraving and ink transfer process in lithography is that there can be variants of the prints which look slightly different when compared side-by-side, even though they were produced by the same engraved plates on the same press. This may be a result of additional passes by one color or another, subtle differences in the ink tone, varying pressure from the pressing of the plates, slight variation in the position of each color plate, or other choices made by the engravers or the printers. The result is that each print's appearance is truly unique.Below is a cropped view of the sheet--without full margins. The image is a fairly accurate representation of the print. Close-up Detail of this plate: Below: The reverse of the plate. Above: From the Title Page of: Wild Flowers of America Below: Magnified photographs of other prints from this collection, to show the print quality, and the characteristic scattered pattern of pigment indicative of a true stone chromolithograph.Condition: Good. As shown in first two photos. There may be stray printer's ink, or minor spots of discoloration related to the aging process of the paper, especially in the unprinted margins. There may be small creases in the margins at the edge of the sheet, or minor chipping to the edge of the sheet due to the age of the print, paper quality, and historic handling.CONDITION NOTE: There is a thin vertical crease just inside the left-hand border of the Vetch plate, (see full sheet scan and closeup photo). Because of the scanning process, the crease is more visible in the scanned images than to the naked eye. It is not noticeable unless the sheet is viewed very closely at an oblique angle.Print will be carefully packaged to preserve condition during shipping. Ships next business day.
