Description: BOUND FIGURE BLUE, gum bichromate monoprint, figures, color, ropes, photographic TITLE: Marcus Bound 1 Image size measures 6.75" tall by 6" wide Color on BFK Rieves Art paper Original artwork. This is a gum bichromate print I made, from several layers of transparencies and negatives. This was a series I created to promote a theatre production. I used to show extensively in galleries throughout the US, but paused my art career to raise children. Unframed, will ship flat.(Ruler in the photograph is not included in the purchase, it's to show the size.) About Gum Bichromate Prints A gum bichromate print is a type of photographic printing process that belongs to the family of non-silver techniques, using gum arabic mixed with dichromate and pigment to create an image. It's a method that allows for a high degree of control over the appearance of the final print, often resulting in images that are more akin to watercolor paintings than traditional photographs. The process: Mixing the Solution: The artist mixes a light-sensitive solution containing gum arabic (a natural resin), potassium or ammonium dichromate, and a pigment like watercolor paint. Gum arabic acts as the binder for the pigment, and the dichromate sensitizes the mixture to light. Coating the Paper: The artist applies this mixture onto a sheet of paper. The paper can be anything that can withstand multiple washings and absorb the gum mixture, often a high-quality watercolor paper. These are made on BFK Rieves printmaking paper. Exposing to Light: Once the paper is coated and dried, a negative is placed on top of it. The paper is then exposed to UV light. The exposure to light hardens the gum arabic mixture proportionally to the amount of light that penetrates different areas of the negative, allowing for the creation of an image in varying depths and tones. Developing the Image: After exposure, the paper is immersed in water. The areas where the gum mixture has not been hardened by light dissolve away in the water, leaving the image as defined by the hardened areas. The pigment remains in the areas that were exposed to more light. Layering: For more complex, multi-colored images, this process can be repeated several times with different pigments, carefully aligning each new layer to the previous ones. Each layer must be completely processed and dried before applying the next. Final Touches: After the final layer has been processed, the print is thoroughly washed to remove any residual dichromate and allowed to dry. The result is a unique print with a rich texture and subtle color variations that can be manipulated by the artist during the application and washing stages. The gum bichromate process is prized for its artistic flexibility and the painterly quality of its prints, making it popular among photographers and artists who enjoy hands-on, experimental techniques.I work with the photographic image because of its innate sense of believability. In much of my artwork, I have indicated movement by double-exposing and double-printing. Through the double exposure and double print approach, I would like to suggest what I believe to be the fundamental idea behind the family snapshot-- people, things, and feelings exist for a second or a fraction of a second and then are gone. Time moves too fast to capture, even with a camera. From smoke-free home. See pictures as they are considered part of the description and I have attempted to document any flaws. I mostly sell collectibles on this site, but have listed some of my artwork as well: See my other items!
