She was born Maria Francisca Isabel Josefa Antónia Gertrudes Rita Joana in Lisbon, Portugal, and was the daughter of King Joseph I of Portugal and his wife, Mariana Victoria of Spain.Maria I is often referred to as Maria the Pious (Maria a Piedosa) due to her strong religious beliefs. Her reign was marked by significant challenges, particularly the mental illness of her eldest son and heir, Dom José, which led her to appoint her son-in-law, Dom Pedro III of Portugal, as regent.In 1777, Maria I succeeded her father as the queen regnant of Portugal. Her reign coincided with a period of great turmoil in Europe, including the Napoleonic Wars. In 1807, as Napoleon's forces advanced on Portugal, Maria I and the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil, then a colony of Portugal. This marked the beginning of the Portuguese royal family's residence in Rio de Janeiro.Maria I's mental health deteriorated over the years, and in 1799, her son, Dom João (John), took over as regent. In 1816, Maria I passed away in Rio de Janeiro. Her death led to her son becoming King John VI of Portugal. Despite her struggles and the challenges faced during her reign, Maria I is remembered as a devout and well-intentioned ruler who faced the complexities of her time with a sense of duty to her country.
