These .577 caliber muzzle loading rifled muskets were used by the British Empire from 1853 to 1867 and were replaced by the cartridge loading Snider-Enfield rifles. Also, these were exported to the United States during the US Civil War to both the Northern and Southern armies. There are no markings for either countries. Overall, this bayonet is in Very Good Plus - Fine condition, considering its age. The press catch is functional with very stiff spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They have very light oxidation spots and a few small impact marks. The metal is in the white. The screw and rivets securely fasten the checkered grips to the tang. It has light oxidation and a strong slot. The checkering is distinct and there is some light discoloration. They have darkened with age. The spine, fullers and sides have light handling marks. There are a few nicks and dings on the blade. It appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The finish is in the white with scattered discoloration from age. There are no visible markings. The soft leather / metal scabbard is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age. The locket and chape are both securely attached to the leather body. The locket has a very light wiggle, almost not worth mentioning. The chape has none. The locket and chape both have light scrapes, scratches and oxidation. They are in the white. The frog stud is securely attached. The leather body has no rips or tears and the stitching is sewn tightly. There are a couple scrapes and draglines. Most of the black finish still remains. There are no visible markings. The leather frog is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age. The leather is dried out and borderline turning brittle. The belt loop is intact and functional. The stitching is sewn tightly and the rivets are securely fastened. The retaining strap appears brittle, we did not test it. The buckle has started to tarnish. Some of the original finish remains. This bayonet, scabbard and frog will be a great addition to your British Pattern 1853 rifle, or a bayonet collection in general.
