With brothers Mike and Don, I recorded epic WWII battles and adventures on the moon (eerie moon effects made possible by a fancy "echo" knob). Playing the recordings back for anyone who would listen, I reveled in how simple recording tricks - like crinkling paper to simulate the sound of fire - could fool an audience. Audio is a unique medium because it invites listeners to become a part of the process, to interpret what they hear, however they'd like, whereas motion pictures leave no such room for input. When high school rolled around, my pal Sam Raimi and I both shared the same radio speech class, which led to a morning radio show on Fridays, during homeroom. It was a great opportunity to explore the medium more seriously - this time with sounds effects from professional libraries, and music that even came in on cue!
