Description: Wonderful original watercolor painting on heavy paper, “The Boulder, Maine” (1975) by Philadelphia area / Bucks County, PA artist Ronald Emerson Hower (Am., 1916 - 1997). Great ‘Monhegan School’ landscape of the New England coast! While this painting looks like it could be the cover art for an L.L. Bean catalog, that’s not uncommon for the work of Bucks County, PA artists since the best of them such as Edward Redfield often painted in Maine. They summered there. This 1975 painting is artist signed, titled / located, and dated lower right. It measures approx. 18 x 23 3/4 inches. Excellent, untouched condition. Unframed. The paper is too heavy to roll and ship this in a tube, so it’ll ship flat, well-packed, and in a box.Ron Hower earned his Diploma from the Philadelphia Museum of Art School of Industrial Art, June 8, 1939. He then served in the Army Air Corps, in World War II. Ron was a great American. After the war, he resumed his art studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). On their STUDENT RECORDS (CIRCA 1910S-1949) site, Hower’s “Date (entrance)” was January 28, 1946. Leading Bucks County / New Hope School artist Daniel Garber taught painting at the PAFA up until 1950. So, Garber would have been one of Ron Hower’s teachers.Hower was an accomplished visual artist. Back in his student days, at what’s known today as the University Of The Arts, he won the first prize of $50 in a poster contest for “May Day at the Zoo.” Hower’s design showed two elephants very amusingly doing The Big Apple. The prize was presented at the Philadelphia Art Alliance by Mrs. S. S. White, 3d., chairman of the poster committee.Ronald Hower was a family man, married to his wife, Jane Parker Butler, for over 50 years. He had 4 children: Paul Hower, Judith Boyd, Joan Hower, and Phyllis Keith. He had eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Ron was born in Conshohocken. He lived for a time in Secane, Delaware County, PA and in Holland, Bucks County, PA (next to Churchville). Yes, he was a Bucks County / New Hope School artist. When Ron retired, he’d been in the Medford Lakes area of New Jersey but passed in Southampton, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. For 28 years, Ronald Hower was Art Director (Art Department Head) at KYW-TV. That’s Channel 3, CBS, Philly. Being a creative director at CBS is a great job, obviously. Most artists can’t support a big family by just selling their own art. Ron was both a painter and a sculptor, by the way. After retiring from CBS, Ron worked as a sculptor for the Franklin Mint, for 6 years. One example of his work is “(68.) The Last Supper - c. 1495 - 1497. Leonardo da Vinci. Collection: Refectory of the Dominican Church of S. Maria delle Grazie, Milan. Slptr.: Ronald Hower”, from the 100 Greatest Masterpieces SILVER 24K GOLD PLATED PROOF 1973 FRANKLIN MINT set.Ronald Emerson Hower remained involved with the PAFA and is listed on their Historic Yellow Springs / Chester Springs Studio site. I believe that’s more to do with the Fellowship of the PAFA and their Members Exhibitions (the actual books I have contain records only up to 1968).
