Description: The Picks was an American vocal quartet that backed Buddy Holly and the Crickets' band on nine of the first twelve Crickets releases on Brunswick in 1957, as well as backing Buddy Holly solos for group sounds. The original members were John Pickering (lead), Bill Pickering (tenor), and Bob Lapham (baritone). These recordings sound so much better than the Buddy Holly "original" recordings available in the late 50s/very early 60s. You can hear Buddy so much better. His voice is out front and CLEAR. The original instrumentation is distinctly present. Yet the recording retains a raw atmosphere and retains the feel of early rock and roll. The Picks were provided the Master Tapes. They've combined the Best of Buddy with Modern Technology to give Buddy the sound he deserves. It doesn't sound fake, synthesized, too "modern", or unoriginal/inauthentic. You can actually hear Buddy without the harshness and dullness of the old recordings. The Picks were chosen to sing back-up on Buddy's first album, "The Chirping Crickets"? Some probably wrongfully think the "Crickets" provided the back-up vocals. NO. They provided instrumentation and Buddy dropped them when he moved to NYC to increase his opportunities, to expand his music with orchestration, and to improve his finances. Those who LOVE Buddy will not be offended by this. How great the original instruments sound, the clarity heard. The early rock and roll atmospherics have been retained. This was not some glossy 80's vocal group that hijacked Buddy Holly's recording. They are the Real Thing. Chosen best vocal group one year in the Fifties. And were With Buddy Holly From The Beginning. The purists probably think that no Beatles album should be heard except for on the original 1960's album that they had when they were children/teens, played on the same crappy record players that were around in the mid-sixties, with no digital remastering and no remixing. Or they probably think that the only apple pie that they can ever eat is the type made with lard and overcooked in that Classic Sixties Style. Trust me, anyone that gives this recording a chance and puts aside their purist bias will realize this is Buddy Holly Enhanced.-- DRM 1. Peggy Sue2. Heartbeat3. Love's Made a Fool of You4.
