Description: Bulgaria: Medal for the War with Serbia 1885, with original award document. Silver medal for the war with Serbia, awarded to Private Peter Diulgerov of the 7th (Preslav) Infantry Regiment. The Serbo-Bulgarian war was precipitated by the unification of the Principality of Bulgaria with the province of Eastern Rumelia; Serbia opposed this unification, and declared war on Bulgaria on 14 November 1885. The Serbian army was quickly put on the defensive by the Bulgarian army, and an armistice was declared on 28 November 1885, primarily due to Austro-Hungarian pressure. Notwithstanding the short duration, a number of battles were fought. The obverse of the medal features the coats of arms of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia; the circular inscription translates to, “Alexander I Prince of Bulgaria.” The reverse inscription translates to, “The Grateful Fatherland to Its Brave Sons 1885.” The circular wreath contains the names of the principal engagements of the war: Dragoman, Csaribrod, Pirot, Vidina, Slivnica, Gorgula, and Braznik (see BulgarianDecorations.com; see also Romanoff, Dimitri. The Orders, Medals and History of the Kingdom of Bulgaria (1982) #241). The medal is in extremely fine condition, on the original ribbon; the ribbon is intact, but is faded with a few dark spots. The yellowed award document measures ca. 14 5/8” x 10 ¼ “ and is in generally fine condition, with a few small tears around the edges; it also has a few creases from having been folded at one time. The image of the medal appears in the upper left corner of the document, indicating that the medal and document were once framed under glass. This medal, without the original ribbon, is fairly easy to find; original award documents, however, are quite scarce. Authenticity guaranteed; 14-day return privilege (30 days overseas), excluding postage, provided item is returned in same condition when sold.
